The Beatles: Get Back
What a wonderful documentary. I’ve been on a little bit of a Beatles kick as of recently and I had been wanting to watch this for the longest time so what better time than now to sit back, relax, and watch as the Fab Four create some of the greatest and most iconic pieces of music ever!! Peter Jackson is one of my favorite filmmakers and he does a great job putting this doc together. I’m not fond of all of his creative decisions, but who am I kidding, he had 60 hours of footage at his disposal and he turned it into a nearly 8 hour doc that tells quite an intriguing story. A lot of the time is spent just watching The Beatles sitting around goofing off and I think that’s amazing because The Beatles being silly is a good time had by all. I just adore watching them joke around with each other, change the lyrics of songs to silly things, eat toast, and of course write and sing some of the best songs ever!!! Ringo is my favorite Beatle and he’s just very chill in this and is quite funny!! Paul seems to always be focused on a song or keeping things in order. John is just all over the place. While George also seems to just chill, but definitely has some quarrels he doesn’t voice much, but when he does, you bet your ass he gets his point across (he literally left the band for a little bit!!). After watching this, I definitely think Let It Be is my favorite Beatles album. I have Dig A Pony, Don’t Let Me Down, and Get Back stuck in my head now!!! That rooftop concert is so sick man, definitely my favorite part of the doc. I wasn’t completely fond of the police bits, I wish that had been shown separately because I wanted to focus on the music but I understand why it was shown alongside it. Also, this takes place in early 1969 and at that point, The Beatles were on the brink of breaking up. I think there were a multitude of reasons that led to the breakup. For instance, George was fed up with John and Paul bossing him around (he also mentions that he wants to make a solo album in the doc), John had recently left his wife Cynthia and son Julian since he met Yoko (which didn’t sit right with Paul), Paul was just trying to keep everything together in the wake of Brian Epstein’s untimely death and was drifting away from John artistically and friendship wise, and Ringo was just Ringo, he was a chill dude and went with the flow. Now I don’t think Yoko played as big a role as many Beatlemaniacs claim to in terms of the breakup. Watching the doc, she mostly sits with John and just doesn’t say anything. She’ll sometimes sing with the lads or dance with John, but she mostly keeps to herself. Perhaps her presence reminded Paul and the others of how John just left his wife and son. John honestly wasn’t the best dude. But I don’t think Yoko should get as much hate as she does. Who knows, this all happened a long time ago, I just find it interesting to examine the breakup and see some of these things unfold in the doc. At the end of the day, a breakup always has different perspectives to it, so take everything with a grain of salt. Anyway, this is a flat out great doc and when it comes down to it, this is all about the music. I love seeing The Beatles make music, experimenting, trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t. I love their humor, I love the tunes, and I love the rooftop concert. This is definitely worth a watch if you have some spare time and adore The Beatles!!!!
