Poor Things
Damn.
The colors, the music, the cinematography, the acting, THE STORY, THE PROGRESSION, THE PACING⁉️⁉️
The list goes on and on with this movie.
First thing is yes there is a lot of damn sex and idk maybe some of it was unnecessary?? But I found most of it pretty prevalent to showing the growth of the story. I saw some people on TikTok talking about how they didn’t like that it had the “born sexy yesterday” trope (look it up I’m not explaining). And I can see why they would have that opinion, if they only read the synopsis, but it tells me they never finished the movie. Bella was someone made from unfortunate circumstances and her being reborn in a woman’s body would probably arise a different experience than if it was just an actual child. But regardless Duncan was the main one to purely sexualize her from when he met her. Even though he didn’t know her state of mind he knew she was naive and even later when he was breaking his facade he said “you’re losing that adorable way of speaking.” Absolutely alluding to the fact he was creepy the whole time. Another reason I don’t like that take is because even half way during the movie she used her lack of knowledge and wisdom to her benefit. Taking from the good and bad experiences with him to navigate with other people and men specifically. Ultimately learning about life in the way she wanted to.
I highly respect that even though we followed Bella, they gave an example of all different kinds of men and how they react to a completely single minded women, someone so headstrong that it’s sometimes to her detriment. Men like Max wholeheartedly accepted her for who she was and was fascinated by her from the beginning. Godwin was a paternal figure, Duncan was the womanizer, and Alfie was like just a straight up abuser. There’s a couple other examples in the movie but the full range of it all was so amazing to see how Bella reacted to each one. Willem was extremely enticing, Mark was so entertaining like holy shit. I was pleasantly surprised by Jerrod being in this movie as well, it was just a really good cast.
Some of my favorite sets and cinematography of the best picture nominees so far. I thought Barbie would take it for set design but the reimagining of Lisbon, Athens, and the interior design of the ships and hotels, it felt other worldly. Making it impossible to turn away, I really felt like I was there experiencing everything, I CANT WAIT TO WATCH IT AGAIN IT WAS LIKE AN ADULT FAIRYTALE.
I’ll be rooting for it during the Oscars, so far my absolute favorite film for 2023.
