Dancer in the Dark
The moment I saw the story and the director, I knew it was going to be a fucking nightmare, but I still watched it, what an idiot I am. People kept asking why she didn’t tell the whole truth during the trial, but von Trier often frames Selma as a pure, naïve figure, almost saint-like, to see how a harsh society responds to innocence. The musical scenes aren’t just random dream breaks; they show how she experiences reality through feeling, rhythm, and imagination rather than logic alone. The title refers to Selma herself: she is ‘dancing’ not literally, but by surviving through fantasy, musical escape, and self-sacrifice while living in both emotional and physical darkness as her eyesight fades.
