My first Akira Kurosawa film was Seven Samurai, and I didn’t like it. I appreciated the plot and understood why people hail it as a classic, but I just didn’t feel that greatness myself.
Ran, on the other hand, is a masterpiece—a stunning adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear. I can’t express how beautiful it is; it’s easily one of the greatest war films ever made.
