Sharp Objects
(disclaimer- i will be trying something new as i review my first mini-series here on letterboxd! i admit i haven’t really looked into serializd to log tv shows but i enjoy watching tv so i feel like this will be a good way to log limited/mini-series that i find. i will log the show once, one the day i start it, but leave the rating until i finish the show. the actual review will be lengthy as i will review each episode with the date i watched it, in order to avoid multiple unique logs per episode. this might not work, but i’m excited to try it out!)
episode 1 - vanish 3/18/2024 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
i think this episode is fine to be our introduction to the series as well as give us some world building. there’s not really alot going on just yet but there are several hints as to underlying plot and where the story is going. amy adams as camille, the functioning alcoholic with a tragic past, has been solid so far. i’m eager to understand more about her fractured relationship with adora and see what led to her sister marian’s death. there’s also a lot of this old money/dark underbelly of the city that seems to be teased and i’m curious. i also really want to know what was going on in that shack that camille discovered as a teenager! the ending is great, a very shocking and brutal end to episode one. excited for what’s next!
episode 2 - dirt 3/18/2024 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
the show is really starting to dig into not only the traumas that camille must have endured as a teen but the way in which appearances are everything in a small town like wind gap. i already had the sense that things are uglier than they may seem, and that’s starting to appear more and more frequently. the townspeople love to gossip and everyone has their own opinions about how things are, as well what has already happened. chris messina’s detective willis is an interesting character, but also one i don’t really like just yet. he’s kind of stuck up in his own way and his inability to see past his biases will probably come back to haunt him. we also see more of camille’s predilection to self harm, ending the episode in a rather haunting way. i’m also stuck on trying to decipher amma. she seems like a normal teenager but it’s clear that, on some level, the demand for perfection from adora is stressful to the young girl. i don’t really understand why her temper tantrum at the end is played off so much, but it is unnerving and i think it speaks so much to the underlying thing of perfection. wind gap more and more feels like a deceitful town, and with this added element of the supernatural (which will surely be debunked soon), i remain engaged with the story.
episode 3 - fix 3/18/2024 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
the best episode of the series so far. after a surprise performance from sydney sweeney as alice, the episode ends on one of the saddest beats so far. as someone who has personally struggled with mental health and sh, the scene where alice tells a grown camille that she thought it was something you grow out of is a deeply effective line. you never really grow out of your sadness, you just learn how best to make room for it and live around it. the juxtaposition between alice and camille’s relationship and that of camille and amma’s couldn’t be more clear. it shows that there’s something deeply wrong in adora’s house, and with each passing moment my disdaind for adora grows. it’s shocking how much camille regresses whenever she has to talk to her mother, always placating her and her emotions. willis is finally starting to grow on me as amma makes me me question why she is such a mean spirited child as the episodes continue. i’m starting to piece together things little by little and am drawing my conclusions but i want to watch a bit more before i make my first prediction.

episode 4 - ripe 3/18/2024 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
my first suspicion about what the shed means for camille seems to have finally, sadly, been confirmed. while future episodes might say otherwise, i think camille was sexually assaulted in that shack. i fear that after it happened, she told adora and adora, disgusted that her perfect doll of a daughter was no longer perfect, started to harbor negative feelings towards camille after that. this episode is full of sexual moments, yet none of them are “sexy” and are instead all about camille either seizing control over places, people and situations, and likely as a means of regaining control over her lost childhood. the ending comes out of nowhere, so much so that i feel the need to push on and continue to watch because the ending was so unexpected. i did like that we are starting to see more of alan in this one, although it was sad how shut out he is from the rest of the family. willis continues to be a questionable detective, really amping it up in this episode as he drinks in the open and never really flexes his muscles when confronted with questions about his dedication to the job. i’m really getting invested and with only four episodes left i just wonder how much darker wind gap can be.
