The Irishman
"Usually, three people can keep a secret only when two of them are dead."
This is a beautifully made piece of art and actually an endearingly perfect film. Mr. Scorsese delivers one of his best works, and it works like a machine. No flaws anywhere and it got carried on the shoulders of the maybe the best cast in recent years. It's like a loud mythic tale of people who are already ahead of others, but then it becomes a silent battle of aggressive egos, and it makes for some compelling takes. It presents you perspectives from a hundred directions, and makes you wonder what is gonna happen ahead. It makes me immensely sad that this film would be most probably the last film the holy trio is in. DeNiro, Pacino, and Pesci. The names are enough. They present a lifetime of legacy in a 3.5 hour runtime and it's clearly a culmination of masterful direction by Mr. Scorsese himself. People saying that this is too long, or boring, I just feel bad for them. It is clearly an excellent story, and is boosted by powerful takes from everyone. The screenplay from Zaillian is very well-done itself, and doesn't bother to pull back from gut-wrenching moments. Didn't ever think that this already perfect film would get any better, but it did on this rewatch unexpectedly. The last 35 minutes are purely meant to be emotional, and how it was pulled off, it still comes across as a surprise. You don't feel bad for the characters, but you just do, maybe it's your soft corner for everyone who was involved in the work, and how the feeling is that we've reached the brim, and we won't be going any further. My love for these people is irreplaceable, and I don't think someone who's a greater figure is coming to grace the cinemas in my lifespan. I was introduced to Mr. Scorsese a couple years ago when I was sixteen. And his work made me learn what cinema really is at the core and how it's meant to leave you with something when the credits start rolling. And the actors, be it Mr. DeNiro, Mr. Pacino, Mr. Pesci, Mr. Keitel, and many more, they portray a power from behind the screen that hits you directly at the heart and have continued to do so for decades. This is kind of a love letter of mine for these people, it won't ever reach them obviously but I just wanna be an adder in an ocean full of adders. Gotta do what I can. It feels like a responsibility, and that proves the fact what a master means to a student like me.
A must-watch film.
