Head
Even though The Monkees overall are seen as the knock-off beatles and deemed as a silly kids band, I dont think this movie should fall under the same category AT ALL (which is kind of the point).
The messages of anti-war and the commentary on the restriction of their use of it is so interesting whether it was implied or visually represented (the black box). I also found it so insane that they were allowed to use very real video of the war and an actual execution in a G rated movie (?) But i think the footage added so much. The constant breaking of the 4th wall also gave another perspective of Peter Tork, who's usually seen in his more "lobotamized" form in the show, and allowed for a more critical and serious version of him added so much more depth to the story in my opinion.
I loved the classic 60s psychedelic imagery and colors, which truly enhanced the nonsensical plot line.
While the movie still has its issues (the portayl of ingenious people's and south Asian women) i think that the overall messaging outweighs those cons for me.
And i know I sound crazy and call me a glazer (I most definitely am) but this movie is so genius to me.
I think a big part of it is the branding of the monkees before this movie. They were stupid and silly and joyous all the time. But this movie, and the breaking of the 4th wall, gives them a whole new look, and in a way it kind of forced people into looking into these important messages and events during the time, and to see them as more than the Americana Beatles.
Mark my words this is gonna be seen as a peak art film in a few years.
