Moonlight
FK HELL, this might be one of the best movies ive seen this year. Such a visual masterpiece and perfect representation of frustration, the unfortunate case of daddy issues and ignorant mom, jealousy and introvertness.
I really like how we see Chiron through different times in life. How the people around him affect him. Naomie harris delivered such a great peformance as his mom. This movie really dealt well with abuse and guilt tripping causing lack of love being a one way street. Mahershalia Ali as Juan was such an effective peformance. Not that much screentime but he really knocked it out of the park. I mean the ''I see me in him'' trope in his character was done so subtlely and well. And Joanelle her role als the care providing but real loving parent was incrediblely done as well.
I felt so much frustration and empathy in this movie. A real gut wrenching one. Yes, chiron doesn't really know how to articulate himself well but his expressions and thoughts were so loud. I mean besides the drama with his mom. the get bullied aspect as I am gonna call it looked so hopeless and awful in every good way possible. I mean growing up in that sick toxic miami (such an toxic city to grow up in) culture around young black kids is enormously heavy to survive through.
My favourite part was his more adolesence (part II, Chiron) act in the movie There the introvertness and bullying were at its worse. And what makes it such an incredible movie too is themes like sexual frustration and expressiveness was so tense and loud visualy but not through dialogue.
People around that age really do think about making love as something big, cool and tough but it probably can be such more of an intense intimate and relaxed and not "look at me'' thing for these boys once the realize it's at the end of the day with who your doing it with. Not where and how. And especially as an introverted kid, Chiron must have been feeling so overwhelmed with that beach scene.
But besides Chiron if you look from Kevins part, he way more of an extrovert contrary to Chiron. He can express himself way easier and on both ''Picked on by'' aspect he can articulate and speak up for himself well. And his presence gives up such a social and expressable guy that girls would really want to fuck that guy and he doesn't find it that overwhelming. Kevin is not afraid of the new one could really say fk hell.
Chiron in his adult life really gave me so much Frank Ocean vibes. Especially with the ''havent seen eachother in a decade'' situationship. Unfortunately Chiron did not manage to escape his cycle of life like Juan couldn't.
It is kind of a real coming of age story and a real young black man toxicness (esp in Miami) epidemic.
Barry Jenkins made an absolute masterpiece. No shit that this movie one Best Picture at the Oscars. R.I.P La La Land incident. Great movie as well but I think it's not outrageous at all that this movie won. Stil couldn't decide which one I would choose, maybe because of recency bias Moonlight but Idk.
A24 distributed, not produced movie. They really knew well what movie they wanted to market as their style and identity.
Still feel quite frustrated after watching it. Did not expect it at all how this movie would go but I was locked in from the first min. Went by fast..
