Casablanca
Casablanca is one of those films that no matter how you try to doubt it could be that good, it shows it is that good..The film asks us if it’s possible to bring back the glory days to the present or is it better to begin a new dream? Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) and Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) struggle with this question. Ilsa wonders if it’s possible to bring Paris to Casablanca, to see if her and Rick can relieve one of the best times of their lives? Or will those memories in them lose their meaning and thus become a form of regret for not discovering the dream of America? These messages do not make a unique situation for WW2, but are tale ever connected in our lives. .Seriously, this was such a great film and I’m glad I could use captions because if I wasn’t locked on their dialogue, I would be so lost. Micheal Curtiz did a fantastic job not only world building into a neutral hotspot in Morocco but also the characters who occupy these lands. Every character had their standouts from a hopeful resistance member to a severing of the third reich who struggles with the enjoyment of Casablanca but the brutality of enforcing Nazi law. .This film just ages so beautifully, those last 10 minutes as our main characters rush to the airport and depart, there is just line after line that is memorable. From “Here’s looking at you kid” to “Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday and for the rest of your life“ and even “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship". Every line just hits hard, and shout out to whoever was in charge of dialogue because this movie wouldn’t be the same with the way it’s presented. .The shots were also fantastic, I felt as if I were in Morocco rather then on the Warner Bros studio lot. Even the scenes of Rick and Louis walking into the fog just adds to the idea of mystery to what will now happen not only to the peoples of Casablanca but also the world as the film was made in the beginning years of World War 2. .Anyways this film is already talked about a lot so I think I’ll just end it here. Casablanca is a beautifully crafted film that takes everything into account. It tells a story that is not only iconic but can resonate with everyone. It’s not just a romance but a war, drama, and mystery rolled into one. I completely understand why people argue it’s one of the best movies in Hollywoods history. 5/5
