Bottle Rocket
I know Bottle Rocket isn't always a favorite among Wes Anderson fans but by far everything behind it is so special to me. Which is why I’ll rank this film higher than the others. (it is in 4th place) Not a perfect debut since people are always familiar at looking through the lens of Wes' recurring visual and narrative style. Whenever most audiences look at the movie, they only understood "how" Wes started, but never "why". The film is very witty once you get to know and understand the inside jokes of what young Wes and Owen put into the dialogue. Almost everybody won’t get it when Wes thought "I think they'll understand. It's pretty funny." (I went in on a deep dive for this. lol)
All I see is that Bottle Rocket is one of Wes Anderson's purest works. An innocent, simple, normal looking, failed heist film. Bottle Rocket is all about friendship, ambition and love. It was way before he started to tackle on deeper themes which he later explored in his career. This movie was born out of Wes and Owen’s silliness in their youth. My love for it ties with my admiration to the Wilson brothers. In summary, this is how it looks like if Wes and Owen tried to do a heist. (They did, their landlord was done with their shenanigans.) The only headcanon I had was Dignan’s character is similar to Wes, meanwhile Anthony is pretty much like Owen. Very suggestive for the little adventures during their college days.
My Roman Empire is when Owen found Wes burnt out from writing the script and the only thing he wrote in a piece of paper was “Bob Mapplethorpe, potential getaway driver, go.” Anyways, happy birthday Owen, I hope you'll write again with Wesley someday.
An old mutual of mine compiled a masterlist of Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson’s collaborations starting from the very beginning until “The French Dispatch”.Here’s the link if you want to check the series out.
