Aftersun
This film was recommended to me by three people who I swear must have wanted me to suffer. It’s a beautiful film that, honestly, I didn’t like during the first half. I was confused by it, given that the synopsis seemed to make no sense to me. And then, everything clicked for me. I spent the next 50 minutes of film trying to come up with a different explanation, trying to reason to myself that I was just reading too far into things. I was not. This film, with amazing depiction of nostalgic and family dynamics, ripped my heart out of my chest and threw it off a balcony. I cannot explain the sheer pain I am in after watching this movie.
While many people watching this film, at least from what I’ve gathered from reviews, think of themselves as Sophie. While at times, Calum reminded me of my father, most of the time he reminded myself of me. The goal for all of us Calums out there is to get better, but this film reminds us that we may never get better. We may try to postpone it, but for some of us it ends up catching back up to us. I just hope it doesn’t catch up to me too.
5/5: Why is he so into Tai Chi?
