Hamilton
If you told me a few years ago that instead of needing to find “Hamilton Slime Tutorials” on youtube, I would be able to watch it in theaters, I think I would’ve laughed in your face. I saw this show a few years back (2019 I think), but seeing it again 5-6 years later it hits different. Maybe it has to do with my indoctrination into technical theater, but what was already a great show has become better with age. I won’t harp on the things we all know are good: writing, orchestration, acting, lighting design, sound design, props, costuming, blocking, set design, etc. It’s really just an all-around phenomenal piece that both educated and sensationalizes the birth of the United States of America through one man’s eyes. Even the continuity errors (such as Angelica’s flowers appearing and disappearing) don’t detract from the show itself because it helps convey the transitory nature of theater. I suppose then I should be against the idea of recording it, but I find it aids in making theater more accessible. After all, very few people can afford to see a show live, and even fewer can travel to see a Broadway show. Definitely a modern classic that has been and will be spoken of for years to come
5/5: Just now picked up on the reference to The Pirates of Penance with Washington’s introductory song. Peak musical reference.
