I haven’t seen any other movie that captures intentions this well. Some of you are saying that Elizabeth wanted to actually understand the character and the surroundings better but I disagree. For instance, in the scene where she had sex with Gracie’s husband Joe, the way she easily messed up his head saying a couple words like “that’s what adults do” without any hesitation shows that she has always been very aware of Joe’s mental state and role in the story. And also how she immediately grabbed the letter after he left all messed up, and started reading it not caring what happened before also proves that she isn’t exploring the situation and circumstances Gracie was in, but what kind of a mental state she was in erotically. I also think that her desire to learn and imitate that, is because she wants to be involved in something real and disguisable and find that one hidden sense of pleasure in so much complexity. Besides all these, I loved it how Gracie knows exactly what Elizabeth is trying to do and even though she doesn’t approve it or isn’t comfortable with it she still lets Elizabeth fully in to her world. And this movie also draws attention to the fact that men can be victims of emotional manipulation too.
