Every once in a while, there comes around a film that reminds me why I love film. Project Hail Mary is that film. I haven't walked away from a movie feeling this refreshed since Superman last year. As a fan of the novel, from start to finish this is as perfect of an adaptation as I could ask for. This is Daniel Pemberton's scoring at his absolute best--knowing when to let the music quiet down and breathe, or when to let it crescendo and enthrall you. Greig Fraser's cinematography is as good as it's ever been, right up there alongside (and maybe even surpassing) his work on Dune, The Batman, and The Creator. And Lord and Miller prove again that they are unmatched in their chosen niche of filmmaking: high-concept genre storytelling that blends comedy with sincerity, a blend that always has unexpected emotional depth. The movie is bright and colorful, with such immaculate use of lighting that, no matter how many times I see the film, I'm still enthralled with how its scene lighting carries emotion. Ryan Goslings performance is one of his best yet--the simple act of a tear streaming down his cheek makes me tear up of all people. And Rocky might be the best alien companion I've ever seen in a movie, they did him justice in every way. I will gladly and with fervor say that this is the best movie of the year so far, no doubt in my mind. This is a movie that has something unique about it--unlike the unfriendly ruggedness of Dune, with not as massive of a spectacle as Avatar: Fire and Ash, but so much charm and visual beauty that I can't think of a single type of person that couldn't find something to love about this film--it has a style that could appeal to ANYONE, not just hardcore film and novel lovers, not just the common man, but both at the same time.

Basically the best pirate movie ever conceived.

Highest octane movie this year.
