Turning Red
How does Pixar follow up their animal transformation trust issues filled Luca and Disney's phenomenon Encanto all about generational trauma? Ah, they combine them.
Turning Red is probably going to be the best animated film I see this year. The premise on its own hooks you in in the first 5 minute, but the last 30 minutes will have you bawling your eyes out. Domee Shi's direction makes the whole movie pop out wonderfully with its mix of colors and early '00s nostaliga. But you want to know why it's amazing and probably the best animated movie i'll see this year.
THE PERSONALITY!! This movie has the most personality in its main cast for a Pixar film since The Incredibles, 18 years ago. Rosalie Chang, Sandra Oh, Wai Ching Ho, and many others put on such wonderful vocal performance that I actually forgot I was watching an animated movie and that the characters on screen weren't actually talking. It was an experience.
And the VISUALS, MY GOD!!! The sequences in which Mei is meeting with Sun Yee and then meets with the PAST VERSION OF HER MOTHER WHO MEI SEES IN HERSELF LIKE ARE YOU KIDDING ME
AND SHE KEEPS THE PANDA AT THE END
10/10, Fuck you disney for not putting it in theaters and then rejecting the LGBTQ+ representation
Final Thoughts: AAAAA GO WATCH IT
