The Lighthouse
The Lighthouse is pure madness in the best way possible, a psychological horror film that slowly drags both its characters and the audience deeper into paranoia, isolation, and insanity.
shot entirely in black and white with a narrow 1.19:1 aspect ratio, the movie immediately feels claustrophobic and uncomfortable. with the story centered around only two men living on a remote island, every moment feels tense and suffocating.
the first part of the movie is especially uncomfortable to sit through in a good way. the characters barely speak to each other. the silence, the sound of the waves, the lighthouse itself, and the endless storms surrounding the island all make the setting feel hopeless and inescapable.
the island becomes more than just a location. it feels like a physical manifestation of loneliness, obsession, and mental decay. every scene feels unstable, as if the characters could completely lose their minds at any second. even without fully understanding all the mythology and sea folklore referenced throughout the movie, the visuals alone communicate everything.
more than anything, the movie feels impossible to predict. every scene feel unsettling and uncertain right until the very end.
