Mad Max 2
" Lingerie, ugh, remember lingerie? sigh "
-The Gyrocaptain (The Man From the Sky)
An absolute miracle that nobody died on this set. George Miller had an eight-year-old clinging to the hood of a semi as it barreled down a highway. Not hard to imagine an alternate timeline where this production goes so poorly that everyone involved spends the next 20+ years in prison (successful as the first film was, Miller and Byron Kennedy obviously didn't have the same "we're allowed to kill a couple of kids if we need to" level of Hollywood status as John Landis* and Steven Spielberg.) Thankfully the absolute insanity of the stuntwork only resulted in some snapped bones; the iconic bit of the raider cartwheeling through the air after smashing his motorcycle into a wrecked dune buggy broke the stunt coordinator's femur, requiring Dr. George Miller to put his medical training to use. Oh yeah, George Miller jumped into filmmaking after finishing his med school residency and working as an ER doctor for car crash victims, so apparently that's what it takes to make a properly convincing chase/crash sequence.
Also miraculous; in a genre that ages into obsolescence faster than any other this remains, over four decades later, a strong contender for the title of greatest/most exciting action movie ever made, with some of its strongest competition being its own sequels made by the same by-then septuagenarian director.
Just thrilling to live in a world where this franchise exists and George Miller somehow keeps getting opportunities to put this kind of lunacy on screen for our amusement.
*anti-shoutout to John Landis; Fuck you John Landis you child killing piece of shit.
