Beau Is Afraid
Beau Is Afraid is a nightmare. In the best way possible. Creatively, this film is really unique in so many aspects. This film doesn’t exactly do anything new, but rather takes a lot of less common aspects and mashes them together to make something rare. Funny that A24 knew very well that this film would flop, but still allowed Ari Aster the budget to make this film. I thank them for that.
I can’t say this beats Midsommar, but it gets close. It’s been years since I’ve felt tense and anxious while watching a film. And I absolutely am aware that a film like this won’t be for everyone. My favorite film critic hated this one. But you cannot deny that Ari Aster is one of the most creative minds we have in filmmaking today, and could stand along with our greatest directors. Joaquin Pheonix also made his character feel so real. He put so much effort into playing this role and there is no other person I could have chosen for this beautiful film. His anxieties become your anxieties. You find yourself relating to his concerns about these insane scenarios. Joaquin is too perfect at conveying emotion.
This film is special and incomparable to anything else. Unapologetically individual. Possibly one of my new favorites.
