Knocked Up
I know it seems silly to say, but this is a really, genuinely, honest-to-God good film. I might even call it beautiful. There’s this amazing sincerity to it you never see in these comedies; it's always a bunch of funny scenes and then they tone-shift to the Big Moment that’s meant to tug at your heartstrings. None of that here. The comedic parts of the script are poignant at the same time, and the same goes for the serious portions. It’s hard to explain just what I found so unique in the tone without seeing it, but there’s one line from Seth Rogen’s character that I think functions as a great thesis for the movie. One night, Rogen and Katherine Heigl both witness Leslie Mann discover that her husband is not cheating on her but going to Fantasy Baseball team meetings in secret. Mann's reaction to this is a great example of the way Knocked Up manages its tone. It's such a ridiculous thing for him to be doing, but she is clearly genuinely hurt by it and makes such clear in an argument scene, giving a heartbreaking delivery of the line "You think because you're not yelling, you're not mean, but this is mean!" The day after, Rogen and Heigl are driving together and talking about the situation. Heigl asks him what he thinks is so funny about it, and he says, “If you saw that on TV, you would laugh.” Wouldn’t we all? But this is real life.
Edit: I just added something like 8 Patron backdrops for this, so I think everyone should watch this movie tonight in thanks to me
