Full Metal Jacket
One of the most impressively made films I have ever seen. Absolute brilliance displayed through the use of dialogue, camera work, music, and of course structure. Stanley Kubrick was undeniably one of the most talented directors to ever reach the mainstream, and this movie is exactly why. It is cross-referential in a way so poetic and natural feeling that you hardly notice consciously but still have a reaction to emotionally. The camera work is a beautiful mixture of incredible looking shots, amazing story telling ability, and perfectly maintaining your attention. The dialogue during the first half is of course literally and figuratively in-your-face loud, but it is all really well written of course and progresses the narrative. The dialogue in the second half is a lot more sparce but every line has an impact that is just extraordinary. The use of music, score and soundtrack, is some of the most effective I have seen. Every needle-drop is so unexpected in what the song is but makes perfect sense for the scene once it settles. The score is fairly simple but makes the tone of the movie 10x better.
A rather hard watch but an important one.
