seen better seen worse guy was hot so gave extra half star

Very fun movie with potentially very dark themes Maybe overreading it, but I thought it was (apart from the obvious) a metaphor for the holocaust, and if not that, otherness and queer found family. Really enjoyed the slightly absurdist themes, the costume design and especially the cinematography and mise en scene?! What shocked me the most is (despite the typical 2016 colour grading with saturation lower than my will to live) was the cinematography and how smooth the shots looked. It IS Tim Burton so what was I expecting. Alas, I could talk about the mise en scene for hours here, from the houses to the props it was all one big beautiful allegory. p.s emma's boots are cunt and miss peregrine is a metaphor for rupaul

"I told you I was gonna set you free Merv" Cut snake is one of the most complex representations of queer prisoners love and the violence which inherently arises out of these suppressed emotions. Set in 70s Melbourne, it's a slow burn thriller which reveals everything at the right moments. I love this movie, it made me cry with the amount of symbolism it threw in your face as seemingly random: the garden, the club, the lighter and the mug. This film also takes a very interesting approach to its character relationships, its antagonist is a queer man- which would usually set off alarm bells- but I think it more-so represents the difference in internalization of a queer label after self realization occurs. Merv is the 70s ideal homosexual, in the sense that he hides it to the point of self loathing. James shows the part of the community who couldn't repress that label- he is visibly disgusted by queer culture but displays nothing but contempt towards women, he is a man who was hurt and took it out on the wrong people. Very powerful message, and need I even mention the beautiful cinematography?! The opening sequence alone had me hooked better than most blockbusters.

solid 6/10. very fun, very easy watch. Amazing cinematography, editing and mise-en-scene, only problem I had with it was it was just kind of there, nothing too memorable or thought provocative. Overall a good movie, just not my taste in movies. Also everyone except Cera was hot asf in this movie which made it more enjoyable.
