the next-big-thing gen z horror is a misogyny-prod fable by a nostalgic genre-bending sensitive young auteur who’s surprised. guess the people saying the substance was the future of feminist horror were onto something. this one deserves all its flowers as it stands don’t get me wrong but like insofar as a culture cannibalises countercultural media i can just feel a ticking time bomb on this one to become an empty virtue signal token film for the nice guy/psychic terrorist crowd. maybe it’ll go down as an actual on-the-pulse warning instead of the usual guilt theatre, but idk check back in 2 years.

cinema audience was doing 5 laughs a minute for this one I’ve never had a moviegoing experience that had crowds all giggling collectively this much. also the trans woman was the one who came out of this victorious in da end so I like the moral of this film thumbs up

performativity theory of violence but make it normie-palatable and stripped of consideration in favour of sensationalisation (or should i say drama??? (cue the tomatoes)) and a bittersweet conclusion. this is the first film (aside maybe spree) that really says the quiet part out loud about the tcc and its likes, which I appreciated, but since I’m a total sperg about this topic i found way too many holes in what was otherwise a decent story. people who complain about the mc’s motivations as ‘under-thought’ and shallow are a tad misguided, the core concept of playing a character and aestheticising the act is realistic to the situation. the character herself was just handled with a bit of a heavy hand and blind optimism. firstly, the casting was so off and uncanny, there was absolutely no immersion for me. not to beat a dead horse but race is a big complicator in the films whole conceit if we’re talking “real world commentary”, and it was unaddressed because the role was meant to go to a white wamen (these writers were defo reheating rupnow). even the gender issue itself, which could’ve been an insanely fascinating angle, only got the brief mention of “id be notorious because i am a woman” and the i hate mondays lady. they really should’ve went more intersectional on it, since the atypical profile is the main topic of contention in the first place. the way the “conflict of the past” got wrapped up was just easy, they wanted to leave the morally grey character as morally good as possible which just killed whatever edge this film could have had. fully agree with the whole “the secret could’ve been anything” sentiment because of how little thought went into the backstory in this way. i know the main point is redemption and the offense is secondary but they’re playing with a topic so loaded you can’t expect it not to assume centre stage. speaking of, the redemption bit was actually quite touching. too bad it all hinges on something they should’ve left in the writers oven for a little longer. oh and also if the film was actually well researched and the mc was an actual tcc-head kmfdm would have played at least once

been telling people “I’ve been meaning to watch marty supreme!” to which many of them have said “yeah seems like your kind of film”. didn’t even end up liking it all that much, ironically. but also fuck you guys what do you know about me that I don’t get out my noggin
