Scream
“Bam… b*tch went down.” – A fucking Iconic line, from an iconic character… Tatum Riley.
Also, this movie is the only exception to the rule that “The cameraman never dies,” but to be fair, he wasn’t holding a camera.
My first experience with scream was when I was 8 or 10… Probably a little too young… but it ended up being the best possible introduction to horror. It didn’t just scare me… it rewired how I watched movies… Now every time I see someone get stabbed or blood splattering across the screen, I laugh. Not only just because I’m desensitized to it, but also because Scream made that so funny.
That’s what makes Scream so brilliant. It’s hyper-satirical but never a mockery. It’s a parody of horror tropes, yet somehow also an honest love letter to the genre. The jokes work because they come from deep respect. Kevin Williamson’s script doesn’t tear horror apart… it celebrates it, points out the clichés, and still scares the hell out of you anyway.
The cast sells that perfectly, but most importantly, Stu (Matthew Lillard) basically runs away with the movie. His whole energy is chaotic and hilarious… The moment that nails it is when Randy accuses Billy of possibly being the killer, and Stu just cracks up with the “TiHi” type laugh, then instantly cuts the laughter and goes, “No… I don’t. At all.” That delivery is insane. His exaggerated personality just fits so well into the movie, as everything else is also super exaggerated, like the sound design and score are always boosted a lot, so it is super obvious. And I just can’t wait for his return in Scream 7… because he is the best character from the entire franchise.
Now that we've gotten into Scream 7… I need to talk about the boycotting... Because let’s be real... The directors of 5 and 6 are gone, and unless we are boycotting the entire studio, I don’t get what people are boycotting for... Kevin Williamson, the original creator, is back in charge. So who exactly are we boycotting? The people responsible for Melissa Barrera’s removal aren’t even on the project anymore. Like, is the protest is about bringing her back… because does anyone really think Barrera wants to return after all that?
