Sinners
Sinners is an absolute knockout.
Ryan Coogler took a vampire movie and made it about everything, music, history, grief, family, and racism, and somehow it all works. Michael B. Jordan playing both twins is incredible, and he completely differentiates them. The supporting cast is stacked. Delroy Lindo is phenomenal. Hailee Steinfeld brings real depth to every scene she's in.
But the real star is the music. That musical sequence in the juke joint where Sammie plays and we see the entire lineage of Black music unfold? Absolutely transcendent. Coogler uses aspect ratios that expand and contract with the energy of scenes, and it's gorgeous.
The first half is deliberately paced—character work, world-building, setting up the stakes. Some might find it slow. But once the vampires attack, it's relentless. The vampire designs are genuinely unsettling, like animalistic predators.
It's messy and ambitious and tries to do way too much, but I'd rather watch something this bold than another safe studio product.
Coogler's best work. This is what big-budget filmmaking should look like.
