Unforgiven
What an epic birthday, seeing this with a good buddy and my girl at a classic movie house on film. Loved the vibe of the Balboa with an Art Deco aesthetic and completely killer programming. After looking at the schedule, lightly considering hitting this up every day I’m here.
The movie was great and it was my gf’s first time seeing it, so it’s fun watching it through her eyes. The beginning was pretty brutal, but it does things previous westerns wouldn’t touch in terms of subject matter and reflection. Eastwood is a cowboy legend and it’s great seeing him conclude his cowboy adventures on such a high note. Hackman another goat that is sad to see he passed recently. They played all Hackman trailers and there’s something about him that is so rough but compelling. He’s never a squeaky clean character, especially in this he’s a nasty sonofabitch, and I wouldn’t take his performance any other way. Now Kilmer is gone too and all the greats are falling, and I don’t see many to fill their shoes. Maybe that’s what the movie is about too, in a strange way. Both a tribute to the past and his career, while also saying that maybe these old times weren’t how they were actually remembered and they aren’t so different from now. Love the ending note of the house and the tree with the grave and the sunset. What a beautiful storybook shot.
