So this gave birth to the Safdie’s. The context of how The Wizard of Oz was mentioned, was just the right amount of wacky to prepare you for the batshit chaos of all its characters to come. Dunne is so good in this, it’s a lot of reacting and transitions from subtlety breaking the 4th wall while still being present in Paul’s reality. And what a perfect punchline ending. We’ll never get another short runtime from Scorsese, but packing his energy into less just bursted out more surreal, more city, more life.
