Eraserhead
David Lynch Ranked
I have barely seen any Lynch films, so I finally decided to catch up with this amazing director and start right at the bottom. And Eraserhead is one of the most brilliant debuts I have ever seen in my life.
I don't know where to even start. The set pieces are absolutely astonishing and the whole world this plays in captures an atmosphere and vibe that truly spoke to me. I have rarely been this fascinated by something, and I mean it. The direction is awesome and David Lynch is a genius. The performances are great and the black and white cinematography is perfect for this. Also, the humor was fantastic and I laughed a lot the whole way through.
Now to the 'hard' part. There are possible interpretations and metaphors everywhere, and it is almost impossible to get a meaning out of everything. For me, this was about fatherhood and the anxieties that come with it. To me this makes mostly sense, but yet David Lynch himself said that no public interpretations were right yet. It could also be about finding yourself, as everything felt like a distant, nightmarish dream. There is not a single scene that wasn't captivating and breathtaking. I was as invested as possible the entire time and there is so much that I still need some time to comprehend.
All in all, Eraserhead is without a doubt one of my favorite films and feels like nothing I have ever seen. It is super rewatchable and I feel like I will get more out of it with every rewatch. I don't know what is more stunning. That this is David Lynch's debut, or that a brain is capable of thinking something like this. Yeah, this is one of the best things I have ever witnessed in various aspects and it probably will forever stay in my mind now.
