Bamboozled
This is one of the most deeply complex and intentionally layered films I’ve seen, becoming even more multifaceted with age. It’s difficult to put in to words every question this poses, every critique it makes, and every paradox it confronts. I truly believe every viewer is confronted differently. It’s damn near impossible to watch this film and not consider how you engage with media, and if you are able to somehow avoid that, then you’re examined all the same.
Pierre feels like a self insert, turned self parody, turned something entirely else. I can only imagine how angry Spike Lee was when he made this: at the entertainment industry, at his contemporaries, at himself.
I could dickride this shit all day. It genuinely pains me that the voiceover was pissing me off. I’m not necessarily against the inclusion of a voice-over in film but it just did not work here.
Anyways, back to what worked; the miniDV camcorder filming! Made it feel more real somehow? Nothing really felt unbelievably farfetched to begin with, but the low picture quality and sometimes choppy framerate created this sense of authenticity that I don’t think would’ve been captured else wise.
I almost wanna give this a 5 despite the voiceover. I think I will.
