The Lighthouse
I now believe I have some supernatural to always be 100% correct when I think I’ll like a movie. Like, I am so in tune with myself and know my taste in movies so well that I just don’t watch movies I’ll be disappointed by.
That being said, The Lighthouse exceeds my expectations...by a long shot. I went in thinking this would be a movie about two lighthouse keepers who encounter a siren and are driven to madness after repeated encounters with said siren with beautiful cinematography. While that isn’t 100% wrong, it’s also not 100% right. And that is the beauty of this movie; personal interpretation is everything. The movie almost contradicts itself with its vague and open ended nature by having a strong sense of purpose. It’s as if everything has thematic importance, but the theme everything lends itself to isn’t set in stone. Almost as if the director’s knew every single way the movie could be interpreted.
In the end, it feels as if describing this movie with a simple synopsis is undermining it and almost false advertising in a way. I hate calling things genius, but I don’t feel as if there are any other words to describe it with.
