on a rewatch, superman is still a fun movie especially in 4DX, however, my dislikes about this movie haven’t changed. i still wanted way more daily planet scenes because we hardly got any, and those scenes were just as important as the Superman scenes. i think the Justice Gang actually had good enough screentime, even though i personally wanted more Hawkgirl. my favs are still Superman and Lois, but Krypto & Eve are just as important. i think the character of Eve is incredibly important to the plot and the fact that everyone underestimated her in the movie and as audiences is a testament to great writing and performance — really hope we get more of her in the future. additionally, i still find this film to be slightly overstuffed (not to the point where it’s confusing) and paced a bit inconsistently (either too fast or too slow), but ultimately, a good movie. do i think this is a perfect movie? no, but i think it did what it needed to do to set up the world and test what audiences responded to and what they didn’t. i fully expect Supergirl to follow up nicely to Superman, but in a much darker tone to establish that this new DCU can (and will) have light and dark sides to it. i am very happy this film is doing well both critically, commercially, and with audiences otherwise the DCU would find itself in another rough spot. thankfully, we have Peacemaker Season 2 coming out next month and i can’t wait to see where this universe goes next. 2025 MOVIES RANKEDJAMES GUNN RANKED

the mid-credits scene going directly into the beginning of no way home will forever be iconic and will always be the best thing Sony has ever done with a Spider-Man project. Far From Home is yet another underrated movie in the MCU probably because it was released after Endgame, but it’s not as underrated as other projects. i think this was a very logical next step in Spider-Man’s trilogy as he continues to try to balance his life as Peter Park and Spider-Man. i think making “Nick Fury” & Happy a bigger part of this movie after Endgame was smart to pull fans out to watch the movie. however, i found their presence to be distracting and not completely necessary for the plot. Mysterio was a great villain for this movie and Jake portrays him perfectly. i think the connections to “Iron Man” were tacky and forced, but at least they had the same actor show up. however, having Mysterio be the one to reveal his identity was a smart way to end the movie and a smart move for Mysterio to get the last laugh since he was very brainy. the cinematography here was good especially when coupled with the fantastic CGI in the elemental & mysterio scenes. the colors were vibrant and blended very well together. the score is great, the production design was nice, and i enjoyed the editing. i found the runtime to be a tad too long with the pacing to be a bit slow at times, but otherwise i really enjoyed this movie. it’s not the best MCU movie and it’s certainly not the worst, but it’s a perfectly good movie and a step up from Homecoming in my opinion. anyway, i did randomly forget to watch this movie after Endgame and moving on to Wandavision, not because i don’t like it but because i meant to watch it in theaters when it was re-released but i couldn’t, so i forgot that i didn’t watch it. however, i am glad because now i can watch No Way Home right after this for that perfect transition between the two movies. also, it’s funny that Doctor Strange got mentioned in this movie and then he shows up in the next one, so that was a clever (maybe unintentional) set up. can’t wait to rewatch No Way Home since it’s been a hot minute, but for now, this is my favorite Tom Holland Spider-Man movie. i feel the tragedy of Sersi and Ikaris needs to be studied.. like we never had a relationship like theirs in the MCU. Eternals is a criminally underrated movie and i completely blame the fans. this was one of the first MCU movies i legit saw in theaters (after Black Widow & watching all projects after watching Wandavision), and i haven’t watched it since unfortunately. now, as i continue my MCU rewatch i finally get to watch it again in all of it’s glory in IMAX (Enhanced). while the film looks amazing in IMAX, the constant shifting aspect ratios was a tad distracting but very cool especially with the different ratios for the celestial (1.43:1), regular IMAX (1.90:1), and then standard widescreen (2.49:1) — very excited to hear that Fantastic Four will be doing this as well for Galactus, and i will get to experience it in theaters instead of my TV at home. the cinematography here is just completely breathtaking and stunning.. not many MCU movies have this level of cinematography and this makes it stand out which is GREAT. every shot looks fantastic and when coupled with the amazing CGI, just creates masterful shots. they really cooked with the CGI here especially for the celestials, Makkari, and Ikaris. the score is phenomenal, the production design was amazing, and the editing was perfect. the performances from everyone was great, but my favs were Ikaris, Thena, Sersi, Phastos, and of course Ajak. the writing is on another level and i really enjoyed the journey it took us on especially because it feels so different from the MCU formula.. sure it’s a bit too long, but there’s so many characters that i needed that extra runtime. i really wish this was received better from critics and audiences because it truly is one of the best MCU movies.. i’m sure it’ll eventually receive the love it deserves once people move on from being pigeon brained and following the hate train. this film deserves a sequel, so it’s unfortunate it’s post credit scenes won’t lead anywhere whether it’s the sequel or Blade, but whatever. i hope the Eternals do show back up whether in Doomsday/Secret Wars or future projects because their story certainly isn’t done and we need to know what Arishem’s judgement is of Earth. at least this semi connected into Brave New World & technically Wakanda Forever and Thunderbolts.. “Andy: All I really want is to be happy for like, one second. Be able to look around and not just see shit. Say 'hey, it's a beautiful day.' I want to enjoy life while I'm still young enough to appreciate it. I mean, that's what it's all about, right?” andy is literally the most relatable character here, and no, i won’t be elaborating. my biggest issue with this film is honestly how short it is because i feel we never get enough time with all of the characters. the films main focus is on andy (depressed gay leaning bisexual) and steven (the aspiring filmmaker afraid of loneliness) which is where a lot of the interesting scenes come from, but i wanted more of Michele and Patricia (more than the comic relief lesbians), Tommy (horn dog) and Deric (man who wants to be in a committed relationship). the film starts off as a dark comedy, but as it’s layers are slowly peeled back and the characters start to drop their masks, the totally fucked up name comes into play. it becomes incredibly dark and dramatic as gay hate crimes, HIV/AIDS, and suicide all start coming to the forefront. Gregg Araki masterfully blends tones together to create a film that’s full of heart with a lot of depth and much to say. the low budget cinematography was a great stylistic choice for this project especially with them blending camcorder scenes with 16mm color film stock. the characters have two different sides to them when they are being filmed vs together as a group so having two different mediums to film that was fantastic. the last 15-20 minutes were increasingly tragic and heartbreaking. not to mention that the climax scene was a fantastically shot and edited bait and switch that was so unexpected and unfortunate, but such a clever way to end the film. the opening and closing bookends are even more tragic as it really showed how much the group changed from the beginning to the end. while i found the pacing to be on the slower side, it was necessary for this project as we needed the time to sit with the characters with this small runtime. i’m very excited to check out the rest of the aptly titled “Gregg Araki’s Teen Apocalypse Trilogy” from Criterion on 4k. afterwards, i definitely will be checking out his other work as i realized a lot of them have been on my watchlist for awhile, so now’s the time to start checking them all out.
