Maybe not the most fair review because I kind of stopped focusing much after I couldn't get into it and then that made parts confusing. The only thing I liked was Jacqueline (and her actress is amazing) and how her protectiveness slowly turns toxic and possessive as she starts to mentally break from the stress of trying to make her life. It was very uncomfortable and offputting to watch but also realistic. Antoine.. I can't give two shits about him. Yes I'm sure the hotter younger woman is your #soulmate and that you feel Truly Conflicted about fucking your entire family over for this... Jacqueline becomes selfish as well but from the devotion to her son becoming twisted (this ties in... Interestingly with the husband and wife reincarnations. I don't know What to read into that but it's impossible to overlook.); Antoine is just selfish as who he is. I wish more was done with his daughters? They're better-developed characters than he is, if only they had the screentime to show it. As for the reincarnation twist, I wasn't expecting it, but I did see the parallels between Jacqueline and Véronique / Carole and Rose. Again with.. weird to try and overlook. I don't think the twist added anything? Both stories are the same either way. Adding soulmates and reincarnation as a 'that explains everything' is an oversimplified answer thrown (kind of randomly) on top of a film that's all about complexity and messiness and somewhat inevitable toxicity of human relationships. Maybe we're supposed to assume that's because they weren't soulmates so it wouldn't work but... if Antoine and Rose are then immune that feels a cheap and random answer as well.

Be crazy and pretentious and too full of your own ideas, be contrarian just to find the limits, the greatest crime's lack of sincerity & the only sincerity is in consciously living your artistic vision. First John Waters movie I've seen, I literally only know him from the tumblr joke about hetero Jessica. I'm finally in on it. I WOULDVE SHOWN UP TO THE PASOLINI SCREENING ‼️‼️
