Kevin Kline and Cate Blanchett felt astoundedly real and profound in this short series. Alfonso doing Alfonso by providing immense camera work with a well thought, super complex script, visiting different timelines at specific times with every character having it's voice over. Sometimes in third person and sometimes in first person.
It's not always you invest so much time seeing how a character feels. How they think, how they act, and why they do so. Every trouble, every thought is shown to us and explained just so we understand the conclusion of it all. Why the husband, moron as he is, in the blink of an eye resolute a that his wife isn't as bad cause she was raped. Well, of course, his single problem was the fact that he felt that he didn't satisfy her enough. HE WANTED TO BE LIKE HIM. But did he really? Would have he been better a rapist?
We don't need to further explain tons of the characters here who undress before our eyes, some with their exaggerations, ones that can be explained for life is weird. And some others of course unjustly exaggerated like the lifeguards at the beach being morons as they were, or the random prisoner at the hospital during the final episode. Some stuff felt wrong, but overall, the series was spectacular. It could have had little refinements that would have made it even better? Perhaps, but the way Cuarón constructed this world for us to submerge into the minds of our characters, often left for interpretation, gave us so much information that to some may have been overwhelming, but to me was a truthful eye to the soul of these characters.
