Forrest Gump
"What's my destiny, Mama?" Mrs. Gump: "You're gonna have to figure that out for yourself."
Life is a box of chocolates Forrest, you never know what you gonna get
I had Forrest Gump in my to watch list for a very long time. Expectations were set high but I geniunely didn't know much apart from the fact that it was about a man changing professions and that at some point he'd open a shrimp business. In fact, I've visited the official shop in Miami back when I was a child.
Robert builds a story filled with elements and meaning through the eyes of an innocent adult. One that suffers from being "less intelligent" than the rest according to society, "less capable" or "less apt". However, the story presents us with how Forrest learns to accept himself as that man, one that dares to do stuff that a million men would never dare to, perhaps a little bit to literal at communicating, but just as human and dear as anyone else, if not more.
This story devastated me in tears, made me cry and empathize like few movies did and make me feel. That accompanied by an astounding soundtrack and photography makes me state once again that 90s films have nothing to envy to the films these days, with this one turning 30 years already.
A coming of age mixed up with a love story not only for an important someone but also to how society perceives us. Forrest Gump topples down on how we shouldn't be looking at what society expects us to do, but to do stuff for ourselves. There ain't a single purpose better than seeking and accepting oneself.
When Forrest gets asked why he is running, he doesn't have a single purpose. He just woke up one day and felt like running. However, people made out of it whatever they wanted to, like when he gave a speech but Forrest would only care about seeing Jenny again and keeping his promises.
Is there something more loyal than this? Will we ever listen to Forrest Mama's and search for our own destiny? No matter how turns we take, the road may be hefty and harsh but there ain't nothing tougher than ending the road without having gone by the places we wanted to visit.
