Magnolia
I have had this film in my watchlist and pending for a while now. PTA was something that frightened me. I passed on watching Boogey Nights for some time now and Magnolia was a film I was heavily interested in watching.
It wasnt until I had to watch it for a class that the urge came back, and boy did it not...
Magnolia is a piece of art. We are shot down right at the beginning with the question in our heads, something that rumbles and twindles between our fingers from the beginning with that tv cutscene:circumstances.
Everything is connected, tied to each other, no matter how far away or despicable our actions may or may not be, we are connected. May it be by distance, emotion, parenthood, blood, relationships, stuff happens to most people, and people arent mistaken when they say experiences are a loophole, everything has been made cause everything has been lived, hasnt it?
Magnolia works around with incredible soundtracks, that never cease to determine the rhythm, both when things are tranquil, when it works as a song thats playing on the radio or the tv, when the climax is about to hit on and we are as nervous as our characters are right in front of us or even when theres absence of music, to tell us through the actors and actresses eyes that they care, that they are present in the moment.
Do we all deserve to be forgiven?
Is there something that doesnt? Or every single action can be forgiven by someone we trust and love, or maybe someone we just met but we happen to have magically connected.
committing suicide or attempting to, abuse, murder, drug consumption, stealing, clumsiness and lazyness, fear, regret, absence, WHATEVER you choose. Every character has something that they regret doing, or something that they have done and would have rather not done, or something they did they are glad they have.
Actions are made and cant be undone, the stakes in life are always high, present and strong. One cant simply shoot by accident amid a discussion and "accidentally" kill someone that was committing suicide. What are the boundaries then? We made the call.
"Oh but I was too nervous and im an anxious person" FUCK THAT
We are responsible for what we do, how we express ourselves, show to the world and we must get along with that as well.
Filmwise I loved the long and close shots. All the way through, with many perspectives and characters every relationship and statement felt incredibly personal and tight which is very much appreciated. Still shots that didnt need movement due to the anxiousness of one of the characters present for instance, like in the kitchen when Jim gets in the girls house due to the loud music.
We are all connected, stuff happens suddenly and not so coincidentally. Magnolia stands up for that, with an incredible cast that transmits so much with their forgiveness and unforgiveness, in personalities that run much more beyond from what we see on screen.
Recommended, now and every fucking time you cocksuckers
"no matter how bad things get, the rain will eventually stop...when you wise up."
