Barbarian
Watched this film for the second time yesterday and I loved it all over again! The premise of colliding storylines is always cool I think, but in this movie it's done in a way that had me laughing all the way through until I was fucking terrified. The comedy is really well done.
A highlight for me: I loved Tess' character! So guarded and cautious but can't help getting into messy situations even when every logical thought screams she shouldn't. She's really too kind for her own good. She makes sense as a main character, considering what the movie tries to say about women– How we consistently have more to lose in any dangerous situation, and how in spite of that many of us can't help but being drawn to that pain, because we're made to believe our tolerance for it indicates how much we're worth.
I also liked how well this movie fits in its genre. It's different enough to be interesting while also being really fucking scary. The feeling that something awful is about to happen never truly leaves you, I was honestly shaking at one point, but I'm also easily scared (I love horror movies tho).
I guess the only thing I'd criticize is the end scene? A little? I loved it the first time around, but the second time it felt a little cheesy. Still, you know, I love a horror movie that makes me feel sorry about it's characters. So I can't really say that I disliked it-- It's why it remains a 5🌟 film for me.
