i think "grief is something inescapable that can completely uproot you as a person but you cannot let it define you in spite of it" is a great message for a movie to have. this one completely fails to deliver on it. theres about 10 minutes total throughout the film where this is the focus and the rest of it is a pretty bland routine of ohh shes serious now, oh oops no shes dying again. if thats all it did it wouldve been another inoffensive superhero movie with little substance, yk something we have no shortage of, but the ending of this movie is genuinely so stupid. kara, throughout the entire movie, keeps trying to convince ruthye that vengeance will not let her find peace. she wants to save someone else from her own fate of seeking quiet at the bottom of a bottle every night, but it means literally nothing because after like the only somewhat heartfelt moment in this movie, she just goes and kills the guy ruthye was going to anyways. any growth you might have thought she has been going through the entire movie is completely undone because what? "she's that fucked up"? apparently its unthinkable for ruthye to disgrace her dead family by killing their murderer since she now lives on for them, but not for kara, who was literally sent away to embody the hopes of the last of her dying people, sent away with one message: to do good in their name. what?? besides all this, which was my biggest problem with the movie, there's also a bunch of smaller, almost goofy problems. what the fuck is lobo's character even meant to be? he does like way too fucking much to advance the plot for what is basically jason momoa playing a rambunctious and chaotic comedic relief character who disappears after blowing a lot of shit up. the green sun? what?? why the fuck is the sun green??? krypto has been annoying to me ever since superman and atp i dont even mind saying fuck that stupid dog bro. ive given up on trying to understand what his appeal is supposed to be if he's going to stay annoying forever. overall i think this movie was unable to tell me why it exists. superman's existence was special because of the environment at the time it came out. it embodied a message that a lot of people needed to hear. if they were not planning on, or could not make more movies to do that then i find turning this into a franchise or extended universe is money hungry at worst and pointless at best. i find it crazy to be able to write this much about a movie i ultimately found pretty mediocre and kinda annoying but maybe it only makes more sense that way.

quite quirk chungus but you get used to it 30 minutes in and its a nice meditation on the cringe but ultimately human aspects of being alive

you know ive never grown attached to characters to the point their deaths actually affect me. it works on a separate layer of emotions where its easy to detach because its not real. sarah dying felt like someone shot my best friend right in front of me.
