Le bonheur
Probably one of the most unsettling films made in this period, this film is truly a horror story, masked as a happy and cheerful one. This story is a about a happily married man, living his best life with his family and at his job, one day however, he encounters a girl in another city, which he immediatly falls in love with. When this girl finally gets into the city the man with his family currently live in, this taboo relationship begins. As the film begins to end we have a scene, in which the man confronts his own wife and tells her about his other love, stating that he has enough love for both of them, initially we are led to believe that the wife completely understands him, as they get to make love in the countryside, but after the man wakes up he realises that his wife is nowhere to be seen. Here we have a truly unsettling sequence, in which he and his two children look for his spouse, only to find out that she drowned herself, and that the confession was too big on her to understand. Not long after her funeral the man decides to have a trip to the Loire with his family, and when he comes back after the end of summer, he finally rejoices with the girl he cheated his wife with, replacing here almost identically, here we hve the most wild thing about this film, with this new woman replacing his old one, the children also barely notice the dissapearence of their true mother, due to the fact of them being too young to understand. The final scene set in autumn, confirms this, the swap was so seamless, that nobody ever noticed truly. Again big praises to Agnes Varda who directed and wrote this, this film is probably one of the best looking I have ever seen and the repeated music motive during the film, also makes this story more uneasy.
