Way less interesting or entertaining than you’d hope based on the idea which is always disappointing. This film feels confused tonally. Fully committed to the horror which flows easily from satanic cults and ritual in certain moments and then jarringly goofy in the next. Also, for a community of world-regarded rare-book collectors, they sure to not give a singular fuck about upholding the condition of these books. All time candidate for the Vincent Chase Award for “is this guy actually good at his job” for the Depp character.

Major Best Picture snub here. This is upper echelon filmmaking from Panahi. Decidedly important. The world around these characters and through them can be deeply felt. This exists in shared experience and that’s the horror of it. As well as the comedy which is created through this harrowing ordeal by the very nature that something like this *is *occurring. It’s absurd in concept, but it is an unfortunate reality. The reflection here is asking the audience how we’d react in such a situation, who we identify with, what form of anger, despair, logic (or really lack thereof) is most in tune with ourselves. And whether we can be better, live with our ideals rather than bury them with the evil that attempted to rid us of them.

Should’ve just been a throuple

This might be the peak of video game adaptations. Surprisingly adequate.
