Mirror
cinematic, poetic, beautiful, philosophical and meanigful, my third Tarkovsky fillm and this is how every film of his felt like for me, every scene and every silence was poetic in a way that you'll question yourself
truly one of my best if not THE best experience since I've started watching films, I would have never thought in my life that I'd be blown away by a film in this level, a non linear like structure is my favorite part of this film, the poetry right in my face where most of the time I don't even understand but I like it, the sound design also just encapsulates me through the whole runtine, you can argue that there's literally many times where there's no sound BUT that what makes this film even better tho, lastly the cinematography, the shots, sequences, editing and that slide at the end was truly absolute cinema experience for me, god I love this film
what does it feel like to remember?
the past, present, dreams the waking life your personal memories, shared memories and and your individual self, all mash up together and it's like watching someone else inhabit the memories itself
one thing that's really hard to get through is that, 90% of the film is memories and you don't even know it, the random gushing of winds through the bushes to him sleeping, even his mom it feels like the film operates to pull every bit of his memory and put it into one, like time does not flow but folds
the choice of playing the wife and mother as the same actress was the first thing that really clicked for me, like yes, there are things in the past that would echo into your adulthood and it's more like the identity is recursive rather than fixed
the way he remembered things also felt quiet in a way, it's more like trying to understand his past rather than make things right, while on the deathbed this happens, you may question yourself, did I love enough, am I proud of my life and so on
the more dreamy it is the more it felt like it is right, the more complicated it is and the more I don't understand it the more it felt right, because for me, that is memory, not necessarily understood, some can be explained but some are never clarified
perhaps the bighesy idea in this film is that the human life isn't define by external events but by texture of consciousness, the images in your memory, the emotions within it, the people connected to those memories and in this way the title "Mirror" is truly one of the best choice ever, because mirror isn't just there for reflection, it's that it reflects child into adult, parents into child, present to the future
I know that most of the details from this film are from his experiences but he makes it so that the structure feels like , everyone remembered that weird feeling of remembering something through sensation, the sound, taste, feelings and even expressions, those elements are truly incredible, they build this cinematic language from those moments and put it as an actual substance of life
