Tu Yaa Main
Damnnnnnn! What was that? This has to be my first creature feature, come to think of it. Horror and this are two genres I guess I’ve mostly stayed away from. Horror, I’ve at least watched a few psychological ones or films like Tumbbad or Bramayugam. But this genre, never. And I’m glad it’s this one.
As always, I must say, the music, background score and sound design were so coooool! The first half was done so well. I loved how it was a celebration of rap and hip hop culture in Bombay, a celebration of love, and you cannot not think of OK Kanmani. But it’s not OK Kanmani. It’s Tu Yaa Main. You can see the influences, and yet it’s its own thing. It’s a Bejoy Nambiar film. Loved it. Loved it. After quite some time, I got to see such a good love track and such chemistry in Bollywood.
There are two writing instances that I really loved. One is when she’s in the pool, having fallen and hit her head, and Flo, who’s hanging onto the ladder, is trying to wake her up. When she wakes up, the first thing he asks is, “How did you fall?” And when he falls, the first thing she asks is, “Are you alright?” I’ve noticed that tendency in myself sometimes, and I hate that that’s the question I sometimes ask. Just those two lines capture the tension between them.
Another line that made me really happy when it was delivered by Avani was, “Do you trust me?” The Aladdin flip. Loved that.
Also, the way the writing was subtle in certain spaces, especially when you understand what Avani is going through. She’s unsure, but nobody is asking her opinion. Instead, decisions are being made for her. And how a mute person helps her find her footing and her voice amid all the chaos she’s experiencing.
In the end, the way it all comes together, where he is no longer abandoned and her guilt about not being able to save him comes full circle, almost like finally facing your demons and winning. But to reach there, you go through quite a lot of scares. I was quiet for most parts and had a smile at the end.
Also, the way the title was used in the dialogues, all love. ❤️🤌
Thank you for giving this film to the world. :)
