Stalker
This is my introduction to Tarkovsky and wow what an introduction.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film so flawless that I genuinely have nothing to criticise. Every element: directing, acting, writing is masterpiece.
The directing is absolutely hypnotic. It made me forget how old this movie actually is. It feels timeless, or maybe even outside of time altogether. Like you’re watching something that exists in its own dimension, untouched by trends or cinematic fashion. The actors breathe life into the abstract without ever losing their humanity. Each word feels loaded, every glance significant. And the writing dense but never pretentious guides you through existential territory without holding your hand. It demands attention, and rewards it tenfold. It feels like a film that isn’t interested in entertaining you in the usual way. It wants you to feel something deeper, even if you don’t have the words for it.
