Poor Things
What a strange and amazing movie. I really did not expect to like this as much as I did. I fully thought it was going to be way too artsy and weird for me. Turns out, it was just the perfect amount of artsy and weird.
This movie is so beautiful - the settings, the costumes, the SCORE. I've never been so moved by a score before, I'm obsessed with it. I love how weird and wonderful the world of this story is. My personal favorite feature is the movie changing from black & white to color after Bella leaves God's house. The movie just came alive after that, much like her character did. The characters and their portrayals by the actors who played them were very well done. Willem Dafoe in particular is fantastic, but Emma Stone, of course, totally steals the show. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about her in this movie, but her performance shows what an incredible actor she truly is.
The only reason I'm not giving it a perfect score is because Bella having her sexual awakening while still having the mind of a child bothers me quite a bit. I think Victoria being given the brain of her unborn baby is a very interesting and thought-provoking twist on a Frankenstein story and her journey through sexuality is absolutely integral to her developing her own identity and sense of bodily autonomy. I just wish these two aspects could've been combined in a way that didn't make me feel so icky.
I truly believe this movie deserves the hype it got though. It's unique, thought-provoking, heartfelt, impactful, and incredibly well done.
