Persona
"All the anxiety we bear with us, all our thwarted dreams, the incomprehensible cruelty, our fear of extinction, the painful insight into our earthly condition, have slowly eroded our hope of an other-wordly salvation. The howl of our faith and doubt against the darkness and silence, is one of the most awful proofs of our abandonment and our terrified, unuttered knowledge."
THAT (the one in the letterboxd banner) scene is like a symbolism for their personas being intertwined. i love how they include that scene as a nod to the whole concept. very meta and an amazing work of art.
the concept gets more clear towards the end, where Elisabeth imagines Alma as her and imagines Alma's reaction to things, as if they know each other through and through. and they did, as seen in the scene where Alma talks about the boy. i love this scene so much because it first shows Elizabeth's reaction and then Alma speaking.
it feels like i understood this film to a certain extent but it's impossible to fully write out how i felt and what i understood in words. it's a very intangible concept and hard to explain. the agony and raw emotions depicted by the personas make me feel things.
// probably too tired to make sense of it when i wrote this, but after actually thinking about it, now i realise things about the morgue and the boy. it's like a bunch of hypothetical ideas into one, what if the boy wasn't born? what if he died? how would life be like then? there is this unexplainable concept that goes on here and i'd probably keep thinking about this one for a long time. i'm upgrading this to a five star, i cant stop thinking about it.
