Not Okay
a depressed girl wants to fuck dylan o’brien and i can relate. but also:
i absolutely loved it. on the surface, it’s a dark comedy skewering influencer culture — likes, follows, all that hollow dopamine. but what really struck me was how deeply it cuts into the messier bits of being human and how far people will go to be seen.
the film even opens with a warning about trauma, flashing lights, and — my personal favourite — an “unlikeable female protagonist.” which of course made me like her immediately. there’s something fascinating about watching a character who’s both dreadful and painfully real, someone who makes terrible choices yet ends up exposing something true about all of us.
yes, she’s an absolute cunt. but she’s also broken, and her cracks show through in ways she can’t hide. that recurring vision of the bomber in the hoodie? pure ptsd, the irony being she wasn’t “meant” to have it. and the hashtag #iamnotok, inspired from someone else’s tragedy, accidentally reveals her own reality. she wasn’t okay at the start, she wasn’t okay at the end, and chances are she never will be.
for once, i wasn’t distracted halfway through the film — it had me in a chokehold, praying it would run just a little longer. and honestly? i think it’s been unfairly judged. maybe i’m reading too much into it, but not okay left me thinking long after the credits. underrated gem, 100% worth your time
