This movie is so raw and unapologetic in the way it portrays the mental health of young teens especially young girls. The way Tracy feels suffocated by her mother is relatable because everyone goes through that, I especially related to it. And her being like this makes some of the adults in her life cough cough her father cough cough think she’s going through a ‘teen angst’ phase because a lot of people in general think that about teenagers especially teenage girls because emotional. Her SH scenes and how the things she used to harm herself escalated as the movie progressed shows how much her turmoil gets worse (again relatable) and how.
Evie in the start of the movie is shown as this untouchable girl, the exception being in the scenes where she vents to Mel and when later in the movie she cries because Mel won’t adopt her, and the last fight in the movie where she and Brook storm out of Tracy’s house.
Tracy’s relationship with her mom Melanie is a really complex one that the movie portrays beautifully, we see how much Mel cares for Tracy and how concerned she gets throughout the movie because she was always “the cool mom” she literally knows Mason (her son) smokes pot and is okay with it. And she’s used to Tracy being really open with her so when she suddenly gets really closed off and doesn’t confine in Mel, throws Mel off guard and that’s when she really gets concerned with Tracy.
I love this movie and it was so relatable that it kinda scares me a little. Every teen girl who’s going through something should watch it because it made me feel seen in a way that not that many movies did.
