Generally solid and visually great, the writing just seems so stiff to me, I didn’t really like Channing Tatum’s character very much, his nervousness and blubbering kinda got old to me very quick. Place beyond the pines coded

Dude, If you say dude one more time I’m going to lose it dude.

Really enjoyable, reminded me of safdie at times, and the camera work was fantastic, I’m pretty sure shooting on film is a cheat code for this kind of thing. I love the despair throughout the whole movie, it’s interesting seeing the Russian mob be somewhat tame and reasonable. Mikey definitely had an amazing performance, might watch again.

Because I’ve watched the older ghibli movies more recently, there’s a little soul lost from the digitally painted characters and artwork. All of the imperfections and character don't seem to be as prevalent. Of course it still is ghibli, the worlds continue to be so detailed and wonderful. This seems to lean more heavily into horror it seems, the struggle of the ecosystems of the world don’t seem as grounded and serious as I feel like they need to be. It’s hard to take anyone’s goals seriously with how little I feel I know them. These parakeets are so weird and scary.
