We
'we' by yevgeny zamyatin is the first dystopian book ever written, which created the genre.
even though the film was released in 1982 and didn't have much of a budget, the visuals are suprisingly pleasant. D-503's apartments look exactly like most readers visualized, the routine is well portrayed, and dieter laser did good job in showing his madness, but the Integral's design is so sad and plain, i just know that they could do better.
well, those are the only benefits of film. the film took to notice D-503's character on surface level, it failed to show the deep, primal obsession of his with I-330, skipped most of his diary notes and interactions with R-13, O-90, as well how he was alienated from them because of their differences in beliefs, including his breakdown on O-90. the portrayal of eration of his feelings and memories was just mockery of the book. in the book, I-330 is full of mysteries regarding her motives and identity, through the process of reading i started getting obsessed with her just like D-503, craving her presence. but the movie also fails to convey this impression, the actress' range not strong enough to manage with it. her death's portrayal looks like a joke. even the character that D-503 listened to in the end wasn't mad like he was in book..
the entire conflict between D-503's morals, obsession and revolution was so weak and impossible to sympathize with, that it even frustrated me.
and I need modern adaptation ASAP
