Babylon
babylon does to movies what come and see (1985) did to war.
the characters feel more like archetypes than actual people, that are used to portray each specific kind of rising (and soon to be fallen) superstar.
it goes all out, as over the top as possible in all aspects. this movie is an intentional mess that hides a real true meaning behind itself and while it understandably is hit or miss for some people, it totally worked for me.
yes, some moments were a little too far fetched, and yes it switched back and forth from the batshit craziness and really touching moments, but the culmination of it all makes up a drunkenly amazing piece of history in a messed up sort of way.
i walked into this thinking this is going to be just oscar bait but it really isn't just that.
this is a beautifully shot, beautifully scored and a beautifully acted, absolutely crazy movie.
and chazelle really snuck in that whiplash solo at the end like we wouldn't notice, i see what you did damien
