I Saw the Devil
probably the best revenge movie i have ever seen.
i saw the devil is the one and only movie i have ever seen that truly manages to deliver the "revenge is bad" message in a way that doesn't feel cliché or forced.
this gory, glorified cat and mouse game is used as a perfect representation of getting what you want with without the thrill, which is what this message is always supped to be.
revenge is an empty concept. it causes even more bloodshed and fixes nothing. some people are so inhumane that they become morally unbreakable, a human being whose awful actions know no boundaries whatsoever. the devil.
our protagonist dives deep into this mindset and the evil around it, and accepts the fact that nothing can be done now. even by getting what he initially wanted, he gets nothing. he loses. he gets closer and closer to what he hates most each time. actual poetry in motion 🚬
now for the movie itself, it does everything it had to; it sets up our antagonist as the worst person on the planet, the protagonist as a revenge seeking and almost stoic individual, who is willing to dish out the most awful of pain upon the prior.
the movie doesn't hold back on anything, featuring some well shot action too when it came to hand to hand combat.
the music was brilliant, featuring a few horror-inspired jumpscares that definitely caught me off guard and made my heart jump, only to be met with the most brutal shit ever just seconds later.
i generally liked this movie's quick pace and horror inspired sequences in general.
okay now but DID you have to shoot an entire scene of how they cut a guy's achilles heel? was it really necessary, mr. kim jee-woon? you good?
