This is pure genius.
It’s incredibly smart to introduce such an unsettling question at the beginning—it immediately makes you think. Then that idea becomes embodied in Lydia, which deepens the reflection even more.
I don’t really think the ending was particularly necessary, but it doesn’t bother me either.
